Stolen pair of shoes leads to over 1000 Shoes for Shelburne

Who could have known so many would have been helped as a result of a lost pair of shoes?

When Dr. Richard Magder of Shelburne Family Chiropractic put out his new pair of shoes to dry after getting wet, they were stolen. Instead of just buying another pair and moving on, Dr. Magder and his wife, Alexandra Magder, thought that the individual who took the shoes must have really needed them and couldn’t afford to buy their own. The Magders knew there were others in this situation and felt the urge to help. #Shoes4Shelburne was created in 2017, raising over a thousand shoes for those in need since inception.

“It was such a success the first year, and we got questions the following year asking about it, so we decided to make it annual,” said Alexandra Magder.

The people of Dufferin are being asked to donate pairs of shoes that have been gently-used, or are even brand-new, to those in need. Everybody needs shoes and it is possible for anyone to be in a scenario where they cannot afford them. That being said, raising children is particularly expensive and little ones can outgrow shoes fairly quickly. If the shoes are still in good condition, or never worn, there is someone who could use them.

The campaign can be followed on social media with the #Shoes4Shelburne.

“We encourage people to take pictures if they are starting to collect their shoes and share them using the hashtag,” Alexandra stated how it helps raise awareness and gets the campaign in front of more people who may have an extra pair.

Shoes are being collected from November 1st to November 30th, with the drop-off box located at Shelburne Family Chiropractic (310 Main Street East, Shelburne) within the always-accessible front porch. Shoes must be placed in a plastic bag and tied. As much as they are appreciated, high heels and flip flops are not accepted. Donated shoes are distributed during the month of December through the Christmas Hamper Program in Shelburne and Choices Youth Shelter in Orangeville. Everything will be sanitized before going out to ensure safety.

“Last year we set a goal of 600, that we achieved, and this year we have a goal of 700,” Magder explained. “We know that it may be a bit more challenging this year [with COVID] to collect shoes, but it’s going to be more important to give shoes out.”

“Shelburne is a very generous community and they have shown that throughout this entire pandemic.”
