Update: On April 26, The Town of Orangeville provided notice that dates for filming and the associated road occupancy permit have been revised.
The Town of Mono is not the only town hosting an alien in the near future. The new television show ‘Overlord and the Underwoods’ will also have scenes shot in Orangeville.
On April 19, 2021, The Town of Orangeville distributed a news release notifying the public that Marblemedia will be filming ‘Overlord and the Underwoods’ at multiple exterior locations. Similar to the situation in Mono, the production will take place entirely outdoors and require there to be traffic stoppages. As previously reported, shooting of interior scenes will happen in a Kleinburg studio. One difference from Mono is that scenes in Orangeville will entail the closure of some of the town’s parks. Weather permitting, filming is expected to occur from May 3 to May 7, preceding the filming in Mono which is slated to take place May 5 to May 7. The news release indicates that dates could change if there is inclement weather.
The Town of Orangeville’s updated its news release to specify that Marblemedia has obtained a road occupancy permit for occasional traffic stoppages, on Second Avenue between Third and Fourth Streets, as well as Third Avenue between Second and Third Streets. The road occupancy permit is valid for May 3 and May 4, with Marblemedia covering traffic control costs. Furthermore, filming is scheduled to occur in several municipal parks, specifically Idyllwilde, Rotary, Princess of Wales, and Lions Sports, from May 3 to May 7.
‘Overlord and the Underwoods’ is a family series featuring an alien in ‘an intergalactic witness protection program’ and is hiding out in the attic of its distant cousins’ suburban home. One of the showrunners, Anthony Q. Farrell, worked on NBC’s ‘The Office,’ in addition to CBC’s ‘Little Mosque on the Prairie.’ Several weeks ago, NOW reported a controversy surrounding one of the show’s broadcasting partners, Mormon-affiliated BYUtv (Brigham Young University). Farrell said that BYUtv told him that he would not be allowed to include clearly identified LGBTQ+ characters. After BYUtv was informed of the article, it reconsidered its position and ‘Overlord and the Underwoods’ will be the first BYUtv original scripted series that will explicitly reference LGBTQ+ topics and feature LGBTQ+ characters.
While many businesses, such as those in the personal care sector, have been forced to shut down entirely for long periods during the pandemic, the film industry has operated due to implementing the required workplace safety protocols. Testing for COVID-19, hiring a COVID-19 specialist, disinfecting areas, and limiting the number of people physically on set, are just some examples of the measures the production crew will be implementing, according to Marblemedia’s Paul Franklin when addressing Mono Council to obtain the related film permit.
